The Priority of Family Worship

prioritizing family worshipHow can your family better prioritize family worship day in and day out?

  1. Minimization: Are you currently filling your days with lesser things? All of us must be careful not to stuff our family’s schedule with so many activities and obligations to the point that family worship must take a back seat. Sports, music lessons, exercise, homeschool co-ops, and other pursuits have value, but they pale in comparison to teaching our children and worshipping as a family regularly.
  2. Prioritization: What does your schedule look like daily? This is very revealing insight into the priorities of fathers and mothers. Parents who can keep their priorities straight are parents who will consistently enjoy family devotions. As my mother used to say, “We do the things that are important to us.” When family worship is a priority, the schedule will naturally open up even when other (less important) things need to fall off the schedule at times. We are to raise our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. This takes time and must be a priority for Christian parents.
  3. Intentionality: Talk is cheap and we all fall short here at times as parents. Discipling one’s family always requires intentionality. As parents, we need to schedule time for family worship and then follow through with it.
  4. Brevity: Remember, family worship needs to fit the mold of your family. As parents we must take into account both the ages of our children along with the daily the flow of our household. This will help us to govern the length of our family worship so that it remains enjoyable and profitable to all.

Making family worship a true priority in your home isn’t easy, but it is necessary. This is part of God’s calling to every Christian father and mother. We can trust the Lord Jesus Christ to help us, empower us, and encourage us along the blessed road of family worship.
